The Sentinel Network is expanding

Hi everyone.

I wear another hat in addition to my Centric duties in that I have a role with the ICGP in managing the disease surveillance network.  Later today I'll be posting a message on the usual GP fora but I thought I'd give my Centric colleagues a head start.  If anyone thinks they might be interested please let me know.  Also I'd appreciate any feedback on the message, does it sound inviting,  could it be better.  It's a balance between issuing an exciting invitation and overloading with the details, did I get the balance right?  Thanks

Michael

Dear Doctor

Now that Covid is moving from the pandemic to the endemic stage the HSE are anxious to enhance surveillance in the community.  The main emphasis is on influenza but surveillance of Covid is also possible from the data collected.
There is a plan to expand the existing network Sentinel network from 60 to 100 practices.  As a result, I would like to invite expressions of interest from practices that are interested in joining.
Participation in the Sentinel network is not particularly onerous and in addition to a small stipend for the practice, it is a very worth while project to be involved with.  You can get CPD points, it's a great topic for tutorials if you are in a training practice, and you get very good at diagnosing the real flu through the feedback you get.

I would like to share a quote I received a year or two ago from a retiring colleague which he sent to me at the time of his retirement.

"Your Sentinel programme was the most rewarding programme in my career - made us refine our diagnoses and gave us rapid access to flu data relevant to our practice"

We are particularly interested in hearing from practices in the following counties
Cavan, Laois, Offaly, Leitrim, Longford, Roscommon, Waterford
But any area will be considered.

If you are interested in finding out more, please send an e-mail to
sentinelnetwork@icgp.iemailto:sentinelnetwork@icgp.ie or directly to me at mjoyce84@proton.memailto:mjoyce84@proton.me

Michael,  we have not been swabbing for this since Covid - are we to go back doing this? I assume that means full PPE for the swabs?  Just wondering as this all adds to the work.  Or do we just need to code?

Hi Michael,
Your letter hits the right note although your retiring colleague seems to have thought it was the best thing ever!
That said it is indeed enjoyable and as a dr you feel as if you are being more scientific than just making an empirical diagnosis.
Patients appreciate the scientific approach too and of course the main benefit is societal  as an ‘early-warning ‘ function.
Grafton has long been a sentinel practice and I would indeed commend it to others.
