ICT Tip 74 – Remote Payments - Billink

You may be interested to hear that I recently started sending tips to the Practice Managers group, I’m up to about 10 already.  Lots of things are only relevant to Doctors and other stuff to managers but obviously there is a lot of overlap.  One thing I told them about last week was Billink, which is a really excellent method of collecting payments remotely that I thought you might be interested in hearing about.
Billink is a system integrated into Socrates that you can use to send secure links to patients for payment via text.  It is an ideal solution for remote payments for things like repeat prescriptions, telephone consultations and outstanding debt.  Because it is expensive it is not recommended for use when patients are physically in the surgery.
Some practices are using it already with great success.  I will describe the basics of how it works.
Tell the patient you will send them a link via text for payment.  This means they won’t be concerned about it being a scam.
Make sure the mobile number is recorded in the patient’s chart.  Charge the patient in the normal way and tick the Billink tab.
[Graphical user interface, application  Description automatically generated]

This sends a text message to the patient with a secure link for payment.  The beauty of this system is that when the patient pays the information is automatically added to Socrates.  The payment will appear as paid and in the end of day report.
That’s the basics.  To get it working you have to get yourself set up.  Do this by clicking on the Billink button on the top right.
[Graphical user interface, application  Description automatically generated]
You will need to know your practice account details and either the practice partner or manager details to be the responsible named person during set up.  It’s very straight forward and you can be set up and ready to go usually in a few hours.  When you are set up the same button gets you to the home page of Billink where all the data is.

There is a wealth of further functionality built in around it to monitor and tell you what is happening around your remote payments and how to manage them which is described in this manual on Centric Connect.

(you need your Centric e-mail and password to access this)

Or you can visit their website here
https://billinkpayments.com/

Remember, only recommended for remote payments that are otherwise hard to get, but for these it works really well.  Repeat prescriptions, telephone consultations and chasing bad debt.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for this, I agree Billink is great.  Here’s my auto text for a repeat prescription and TCI (if it helps anyone)-
Hi XXXX, nice to hear from you- script has gone to YY pharmacy x 6m, a fee note follows. If it is ~ 1y since seen, pls make appt with Nr Sue for bloods, BP, urine check, then wait a week, then see me for results and ‘Dr exam.’ Rgds, Keith

Yes, it is expensive, but it is often the difference between being paid and not paid, at which point it is great value!

I thought this would be a great time saver for admin staff and reduce defaulters but there seems to be some reluctance across Centric to adopt Billink - maybe this has changed ??

Indeed Gavin, there was an initial reluctance because the costs are high compared to other providers hence the emphasis on remote payments only for the moment.  But for those remote payments it’s really excellent as its often money that is very hard or sometimes never collected.  Scripts, telephone consults and outstanding / bad debt.  The seamless integration with Socrates is a great bonus and worth most of the extra charge.
While maybe not yet fully officially endorsed, you can take it that I wouldn’t have posted about it if the organisation wasn’t happy for us to adapt it for remote payments.

[image001.png] This sends a text message to the patient with a secure link for payment. The beauty of this system is that when the patient pays the information is automatically added to Socrates. The payment will appear as paid and in the end of day report. That’s the basics. To get it working you have to get yourself set up. Do this by clicking on the Billink button on the top right. [image002.png] You will need to know your practice account details and either the practice partner or manager details to be the responsible named person during set up. Repeat prescriptions, telephone consultations and chasing bad debt.
