Per chance anyone got any good ideas, tips, contacts for finding student accommodation in Galway?

One of my boys heading over to start Biomed.

Hi Gavin, my son is there too and he tells me that he joined a Facebook group called ‘Galway house hunting for sound people .’ (Really!)  It’s a closed group but you can apply to join and Jack got a room in a share for about €550 including bills. I’m sure if he’s your son he’s sound. K

Hi Gavin

It’s been a good while since I was in college in Galway but hopefully some advice is still relevant.

Most people going to NUIG rent around the west side of the city. Private renting in houses is popular - hazel park, cherry park etc, anywhere in Newcastle/Dangan. West side is also popular, but is not as nice as the likes of Salthill which can be much pricier. West side can be a little rougher but thankfully I had no issues when living there as a student.

Student accommodation is popular with first years understandable and Corrib Village is basic but a great place to live (and a lot of fun). There’s lots of other student accommodation around the west side, I’m not sure is Dun Áras still on the go or Lisdonagh. I also had friends living in some student accommodation in Terryland (I can’t remember the name) and they liked it.

The city centre is very walkable from the university so city centre would be good too particularly around woodquay etc but again comes with €€€. The east side of the city is normally where GMIT students live, again there’s student accommodation over there (Merlin Park, Bohermore, Ballybane spring to mind) but it’s a bit of a faff getting across the city. There is a bus service but I’m not sure if it has become more reliable over the years.

Daft.ie, Facebook or good old fashioned notice boards in the college and word of mouth was how to get accommodation.

I also did biomed in Galway for a year before moving in to Dublin. Made some great friends on the course whom I’m still in touch with today. It’s a great college and a lot of fun too. Being from county Galway I had a lot of school friends in the city too but it’s a great place to meet new people and make lots of friends. It’s a very student friendly city.

Invest in rain gear. And about twenty umbrellas.

Hi Gavin

It’s been a good while since I was in college in Galway but hopefully some advice is still relevant.

Most people going to NUIG rent around the west side of the city. Private renting in houses is popular - hazel park, cherry park etc, anywhere in Newcastle/Dangan. West side is also popular, but is not as nice as the likes of Salthill which can be much pricier. West side can be a little rougher but thankfully I had no issues when living there as a student.

Student accommodation is popular with first years understandable and Corrib Village is basic but a great place to live (and a lot of fun). There’s lots of other student accommodation around the west side, I’m not sure is Dun Áras still on the go or Lisdonagh. I also had friends living in some student accommodation in Terryland (I can’t remember the name) and they liked it.

The city centre is very walkable from the university so city centre would be good too particularly around woodquay etc but again comes with €€€. The east side of the city is normally where GMIT students live, again there’s student accommodation over there (Merlin Park, Bohermore, Ballybane spring to mind) but it’s a bit of a faff getting across the city. There is a bus service but I’m not sure if it has become more reliable over the years.

Daft.ie, Facebook or good old fashioned notice boards in the college and word of mouth was how to get accommodation.

I also did biomed in Galway for a year before moving in to Dublin. Made some great friends on the course whom I’m still in touch with today. It’s a great college and a lot of fun too. Being from county Galway I had a lot of school friends in the city too but it’s a great place to meet new people and make lots of friends. It’s a very student friendly city.

Invest in rain gear. And about twenty umbrellas.
